Triple Screen
Why is this important?
A “triple screen” includes three tests for pregnant women that can provide information about their risks of having a baby with certain birth defects or genetic conditions.
In the second trimester of pregnancy, a test called “Multiple marker screening” is offered to detect Down syndrome, trisomy 18 (a genetic disorder that damage’s a baby’s ability to grow and develop appropriately) and neural tube defects (birth defects of the brain and spinal cord).
Who needs a triple screen?
This measure applies to CMG’s Obstetrics and Gynecology providers (physicians, nurse practitioners and physicians’ assistants). Twice a year, CMG audits patient charts to make sure these providers have documented that they discussed the screening and/or that the patient received the screening before she is 22 weeks along in her pregnancy. The current score listed is based on the June 2008 audit.
If a patient refuses the screening, it must be documented. Providers must document in patients’ charts/records that they counseled them about receiving a triple screen.
